I really feel happy and I want to skip for joy now.
Today, I have three issues.
First, Service Learning report
Second, Service Learning reflection journal
Third, Intensive French final test
yesterday, I was really tired because I took times to finish SL report and SL journal...
because of them, I could not study French well...
I really concerned whether I could answer the questions...
However, I survived!!!!!!
I could hand in SL report and journal, and I could manage French test. Maybe...
I don't know why I feel free from any fear.
However, I have two another test...
I have to survive again....

6.13: Mr. Kitashiro day
We had a very very very special guest, Mr. Kitashiro!
His talk, his strategy in IBM, his character, his belief….
I got lots of inspiration from him.
I was amazed and surprised at his character.
For instance, he said he felt little stress and he rarely got angry.
I really びっくり, because I mostly feel stress from such as assignment, preparation for classes etc. I cannot manage myself, so I always fight with stress…
However, he is busier than me but he manages himself and keeps himself.
I have deep respect for him.
I want to manage and keep myself as Kitashiro!
In addition, he is a capable leader.
He always deeply considers not only his employee but also his customers.
What is the best for them?
How IBM succeeds in market?
His any approach is full of love.
I could see what kind of person become true leader.

Final Presentation Review
Yoshika and I presented “Our Iceberg Is Melting.”
The story gives people who want to be a leader useful leading strategy.
Hero of the story, Fred challenged big issue which was “our iceberg is melting.”
I was impressed by Fred. For example, he never gave up, found the new ways, talked a lot with others, listened others and so on.
His actions show us the picture of a leader.
What should a leader do?
How does a leader face and solve challenges?
What is quality of a leader?
The book enables us to consider what leadership is.
――――――
For my presentation
I made a lot of slide with animation, so I had to push the button to be timed nicely.
I felt nerves, so I made mistake to push the button, especially, first slide which is the picture of a lot of penguins.

Chapter 16
“The art of thriving” has 5 elements: Work, Relationship, Renewal, Physical Health and Purpose. They are necessary to become a leader, but it is difficult to get the skills. As far as I am, I need more efforts to achieve. Especially, I tend to neglect balance between Work and Physical Health. For example, when I have assignments which I have to finish by the same deadline, I often fail time management to complete them. I have to stay awake till the late hours, so I do not get enough sleep almost the every day. However, the Spartans mention “You cannot have a healthy mind without a healthy body.” Therefore, I have to acquire the skill which I manage my work to get enough sleep. Keep the balance is the highest priority for me.
What I have to change my condition:
I sort out a lot of things by making a to-do list, and then I finish my tasks effectively to ensure adequate sleep.
In addition, I heard the sentences before, “I can always tell when someone is trying to copy me or another musician. Sometimes you have to play for a long time before you can play like yourself.” The words are true. For example, everyone can speak their own mother tongue by imitating their surroundings like mother, father. Then, they express their feelings in their ways.

My personal mission statement
I believe it is not until people share their happiness with others that they can achieve true happiness. Thus, I hope to relate to and live together with a large amount of people as much as possible, and share and create happiness with them. This is my central vision. The process of sharing and creating happiness give me discoveries and opportunities to review my act. Then, I can find my new goal and get my energy to keep going.
In addition, when I face the challenge and find what I am interested in, I always challenge anything without hesitation. The reason is I believe it rather regret after I fail than regret not doing anything. I only live once, so I do not miss any chance to let me enhance. If I fail, I will make use of the experience not to fail again. Numerous experiences enable me to overcome my weakness and know myself step by step.
I hope to feel “I lived together with others and share my happiness maximum. I could enhance myself maximum” at the time of my life end.

5.18 class
Today’s class focuses on negotiation tendencies.
We divide 5 groups and share the results of test each other.
My group is Hase Jun, Yurie, Yuki, Mao and I.
I am a problem solving type. Although problem-solving score is the highest score:28, but score of compromise and smooth is 27 and 26.
After sharing our scores, we notice that there is no one who is forcing person. Also, everyone has a high score in problem solving comparing other functions.
It shows that we may have the capability of leader.
Problem solving score is the highest in my result. Yet, I have little experience to deal with conflict, so I do not know I am a problem solving person or not. However, I want to be a true problem solving person.

Week 6 Writing Assignment
I will focus on chapter 8 “Lighten up” for 6 week writing assignment.
Especially, I will consider “celebration.”
I think there are countless celebrations in ordinary life. For example, section party, nomikai, “job well done” party and so on. Such parties celebrate completing job and big project, winning competitions or games or just gathering. Why people hold such parties with their friends, family and colleges? There are mainly two reasons for this. First, they share their happiness and accomplishment. Second, they promote solidarity within the group. In addition to them, someone work hard to hold such parties. In other words, they think parties as a goal. Although there are various ideas in such parties, parities make people laugh and ease their mind.
Shacklton also held various parties in his expedition. In addition, he even celebrated small things. He was extremely good at keeping cheerful mood in his group even though they faced big problems and despair in the expedition. Small pleasures and laughing in harsh condition make people keep their motivation, relationship between members, vitality. Moreover, people can forget discomforts when they are laughing. Those are truly “the spirit of celebration continued throughout the darkest of days, when cheerful rituals could easily have turned to deep despair.”
I have never experienced harsh condition like Shacklton’s expedition. However, I often face difficulties and stressful situations. For example, when I was up to my neck in assignment, I was always irritated because of lack of sleep. I could not think carefully, and I was in a terrible mood, but I could not neglect my assignment. Owing to this condition, more and more I felt awful. However, my friends always let me forget them when I am talking and laughing with them. It is just a meaningless conversation. Nevertheless, I could recover my mind, and I could keep going.
In addition, when I finish my task such as test, big assignment or school term, I always buy some sweet treats, or I do whatever I want. These are celebration for me. Thanks to them, I can relax and feel the ease. Also, I can feel to keep working again. Small celebrations make me acquit myself from mental stress, fatigue and distress.
In conclusion, Shacklton uses celebrations to keep his members’ moral. However, ordinary people also can use it effectively in their own lives. Celebration give them motivation and energy to drive themselves forward. Celebration is essential for human beings to live actively or happily.

Week Five Writing Assignment
I would like to talk about my team, members of the stuff in restaurant. I work in an Italian restaurant, Grazie Gardens. My job is mainly attending guests. Team work is the most important to provide good service. Especially, it is needed when our store is very crowd. If the member of the stuff cannot make good communication, guests cannot have a nice lunch or dinner time. In other words, whether guests can spend comfortable time or not is our stuff responsibility.
There are many kinds of member such as high-school students, college students, graduate students, young working people, and housewives. We are different from gender, career. However, the most significant factor is not career but a corporation in serving. We are one team to let guests have a nice mealtime.
When the restaurant is crowding, we always divide job and corporate each other. For instance, a person direct guests to their table and provide folk, knife and wet wipe; a person take order; a person serve their meal. However, we have to judge flexibly as the situation demands. Thus, sharing information such as the number of guests who wait for entering; that of unoccupied table to see guests smoothly.
We try to reduce the gap between the stuff through talking each other. Talking with other members give me new information such as their lifestyle, school life, what they think about and so on. Sharing information makes us unite because we can know others and trust them.
There are many difficulties to attend guests. However, I try to overcome them with the member of stuff.

Week Four Writing Assignment
Perkins mentions leaders should take care themselves because they are the foundation in their groups. However, Shacklton takes little care of himself. Also, he does not have good health. Nevertheless, he leads his members to the right direction.
The chapter 4 focuses on “Stamina.” As far as I am concerned, I sometimes sacrifice myself. Especially, I often cut out sleeping nowadays. Before entering ICU, I have never dreamed to lose my sleep. When I was a high school student, I used to going to bed at 12 o’clock at the latest even if I did not finish homework. Sleep has been the highest priority for me for a long time!
However, my priority has changed since I became an ICU student.
Since the classes started, I have faced large amount of assignments and preparation for classes. I have never experienced such condition in high-school life. Thus, I took much time to complete them every day.
The hardest time was the week at the beginning of June, 2010. At that time, spring term almost finished, and the final came around.
At that time, I took ARW, RCA, ALN, ASP, ALS, Economy and Economics and Globalization and Society. I had to take two tests, term papers, presentation, and preparations for class etc. I did not do a very good job, so I took a lot of time to do anything. From to , I did assignments until around 5 o’clock, slept an hour, got up and went to school, attended classes, came home and did assignments….
I repeated the process a week. Despite massive lack of sleep, I did not feel terrible at all because there are two reasons for this. First, I did not want to give classmate troubles because of not completing assignments. Second, I did not want to give up and escape from assignments because I did not want to defeat myself. The reasons made me get over the week.
However, I realize that sleep is essential to keep physical and mental balances. I could squeeze through the big week, but I was too exhausted to care of myself. There were sometimes I could not think properly. All I could do was to attend ICU and take classes. I did not afford to take care of myself. I was great concerned by BI members at that time because I did not have enough sleep.
As Perkins mentions “Do what you need to do to accomplish your work―but make sure that you keep one hand free to keep yourself from being washed overboard”, I notice it is important to get adequate sleep to keep my health; keep a balance between physical and mental. Health is important to keep doing my best. Therefore, I decide to stick in my work so that I achieve both my work and ensuring enough sleep.

Week Three Assignment
Sometimes I feel frustrated, disappointed or down. For example, I cannot get a good result even if I made efforts. Another one is I feel depressed for no apparent reason. When I feel down, I often eat, sleep or talk with my friends and mother. However, it is difficult for me to find good ways to solve such conditions except detachment reality because I tend to think them badly. Thus, I worry myself too much over.
The biggest problem I always face is to strike a balance between study and hobby. I can only manage to finish preparation of classes and doing assignments, so I cannot have enough time to spend enjoying my hobbies. Especially, I want to study IELTS, Development Studies, radio courses such as French and Little Charo which is English program and reading novels. However, I cannot do them. Thus, what I cannot keep the balance is my main issue.
The problem has afflicted me for a long time. I struggle to get over it; However, I have not found a satisfactory solution yet. I could not achieve the goal in the freshman year, so I set my mind to deal with learning in ICU and what I want to do before starting the sophomore year.
After that, I manage my schedule to finish assignments and preparation as much as possible I can by Saturday. However, eventually, I cannot complete them by Saturday.
Therefore, I could take a little time to spend what I want to do. I would like to break the vicious circle, so I have to change my mind further!
What should I do to change my situation?
Capable leaders including Shacklton give me clues.
For instance, Shacklton is different when he faces adversities. He says “I confess that I feel the burden if responsibility sit heavily on my shoulders; but one the other hand, I was stimulated and cheered by the attitude of the men.” In other words, he does not escape from reality. Furthermore, he faces any adversities with his optimistic spirit. In addition, Seligman suggests “ABCDE model”: Adversity, Belief, Consequences, Dispute and Energy. According to model, the most important part for me is “Energy.” I apt to defeat my negative mind; “I did same things bad again, oh, I feel like a failure…”
I have to break out of negative mind not to repeat the vicious circle.
To achieve this, I must not escape from reality. I have to come face to face with adversities, and improve my issue step by step. That is every way I can think of now.
However, as Lloyd August Ward says “Knock on the door, pull on the handle, and, if you have to, dismantle the hinge.” If I will not step ahead toward my goal, I never change.
I will struggle to achieve it!

4.27 class
Today’s class focused on negotiation and WHAT’S YOUR SENTENCE?
My group, Yurie, Takao and I, reflected and evaluated our previous negotiation.
Our result of it was Buyer 1 buys 5 eggs first. Next, Seller establishes her snake farm and increases the number of eggs. And then, Buyer 2 buys 10 eggs.
However, other group was different results.
They focused on parts of eggs: yolk part and white part.
We did not notice this point!
If we realized it, our result was different.
Thanks to today’s class, I could understand the importance of inspiration and information.
I want to consider deeply to doing next negotiation.

Week Two Writing Assignment
I want to get involve in development cooperation of developing countries. Before entering ICU, I have never thought I will engage in such work someday. I would like to be a flight attendant since I was a junior high school student. However, I completely changed my mind. The reason why I hope to cooperate on development is I took the class, “Globalization and Society” in the spring term. Professor Oishi gave me new points of view of developing countries. I was shocked and impressed by her story. After the spring term, I was interested in “developing countries” and “development cooperation.” However, my interests were too abstract, so I did not know what I want to do and what I should do. This condition has not changed yet. Thus, I try to consider my short and long term goal through this week assignment.
Short-term goal
One day, I went to the academic center, and I talked with an adviser. He told me “You should decide how you learn development study because there are many ways to approach.” Thus, I have to decide it at the end of the second year.
My short-term goal is deciding how I approach development cooperation.
There are three possible steps to achieve the short-term goal.
First, I should gain information and knowledge from books, journals, news, lectures etc. I have not read those relating development cooperation ever, so they will help me expand my thoughts and image.
Second, I should talk with professors who study development from various points. I will listen to valuable stories from them because professors have worked in NGO, NPO, UN, governments and so on. In addition, they have learned their major fields for a long time, so they will give me clues and advices through dialogue.
Third, I listen to junior or senior students who major development Studies or other subject relating it. Especially, senior students have to write graduation thesis, so they research and consider very well. Therefore, I feel their inspiration, and they will stimulate me .
I will follow the three steps, and decide to satisfactory major.
Long-term goal
My long-term goal is to assist education in developing countries in the future. There are many steps to fulfill my dream. First, I should decide how I approach development support. I will mention the first step below. Second, I should acquire language skills such as English, French, Spanish and so on. In particularly, I want to focus on education in African countries, so I should master English and French. Third, I should absorb knowledge including relating development support, international relationship, international economics, political situations, history, what people in developing need and so on. There are many kinds of knowledge, so I have to focus on one or two, and then I should master them. Fourth, I want to go abroad to master my specialty. Especially, I hope to go and study in United Kingdom because it is one of the most famous for development Studies. In addition to this, I may share and consider development with students who are interested in it as well as me. Fifth, if I can, I want to participate in Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers because I want to see actual condition in developing countries and consider what I can support for them.
Finally, I hope to work in NGO, NPO, JICA or company relating development support.
I have to stretch a lot of tasks step by step to achieve my goal. However, I will never give up and make my dream come true!
4.20 class
Today’s class focused on negotiation skills.
I have never had such class before, so I looked forward to doing but I was concerned I could speak…
I found negotiation is difficult but interesting.
Today’s negotiation situation was two persons need two oranges.
I worked with Mao.
We tried to reach win-win result but it was not easy ;(
At last, we finished partial win result.
Yoshika’s group succeeded in win-win result.
They noticed which part they want to need; person A needs outside of orange and person B needs inside of it.
If people think well, they can realize people’s position properly. However, it is not simple!
If you want to succeed in negotiation, you have to notice what people really need to reach win-win result.
I practice again and again, and then I want to master negotiation skill.

4.18 class
The class is always interesting for me :)!
Today's class was SOFTEN lesson part 2.
We focused on eye contact and posture when we speaking in front of people such as presentation, introducing their selves and so on.
What is important speaking in front of people is
1. Eye contact (keep seeing at least 2 seconds each person with warm smile )
2. Posture (a little bit lean forward but not to fall)
3. Stability (keep one’s weight on both feet)
4. Position of hands and body symmetrically
I learned those things before practice but it was very difficult to do everything naturally … ;(
In my turn, I was really nervous to speak in front of group members, so I could not make good eye contact and keep body symmetrically. Also, I often raise my eyes heavenward.
I have many tasks to be good speaker…
However, #%’(‘&* speak ( We did first to practice eye contact in the class) was interesting and difficult.

4.13 class
Today’s class was very interesting for me! I have never paid attention to the importance of quality of hand shake and facial expression. I will participate in National Park program in this summer, so I have to master good hand shake to communicate with park stuff and tourists successfully. I will never forget to shake hand firmly, warmly and briefly when I meet someone at the first time.
In addition, Ken told us about a variety of handshake. I have not noticed there are intentions when people shake hands. For example, according to pictures which Ken showed us in this class, President Bush generally smile when he took pictures with presidents or prime ministers from other countries. However, there is a picture which is a little bit different from other pictures. President Bush seemed to look sharply at President Putin. The relation between the United States and Russia may not be good at the time.
We can get information from not only the contents of news but also the pictures. It is interesting, isn't it?
Finally, I’m glad to meet member of LILTDY and attend Ken’s class again!
I hope the class will become enjoyable class

Week One Writing Assignment
I have experienced many mental limits such as entrance exams and the tournaments of club activity and so on. However, I have rarely managed my limits, both physical and mental conditions before entering ICU.
After becoming an ICU student, I had to struggle to survive arduous conditions because of spring term of ELP, especially ARW. During the spring term, I was always pushed into strenuous life. For example, I would often sleep at least six hours every day, but I could sleep at least one hour a week at the end of the term. In addition, I had no idea how to keep good mental balance, so I sometimes depressed. Also, I felt not enjoying my freshman life because it was very hard to manage assignments and classes.
I have never stretched such situations before, so I faced tall wall in front of me. However, I crossed over difficulties.
But what qualities could I get over difficulties: both mental and physical limits?
One reason is my character: I am very competitive girl. Especially, I hate to defeat myself because I feel frustrated when I cannot achieve what I want to do because of my laziness. For instance, I am apt to put my own personal fulfillment before work; I watch TV before completing assignment. Thus, I decide not to ease up on the job even though I have a huge amount of homework. Thanks to my rule, I never gave up and focused my energy on my learning during the term.
Second reason is members of section BI. They always helped and raised me up. If they had not been my friends, I may have not survived spring term. Their smile made me relaxed when I felt depress. Also, they let me forget all about unpleasant things when I frustrated not to express what I want to say in group discussion, when I did not manage well to assignments etc. As can be seen, section BI members support and cheer up me when I felt down, so I was able to keep working.
Final reason is my goal. The reason why I made up mind to enter ICU was I would like to improve my English skills. That is why I could stick with hard classes, assignment, lack of sleep and fatigue during the spring term.
For three reasons, I suffered from enormous challenges during the spring term, but I survived and overcame myself. I believe I can get over any challenges if I keep in mind “never give up”, have precious friends and head toward my own goal.
